Journal Prompts: Decluttering for Women of Faith
For women of faith, decluttering is part of our calling. So, what you are called to do, specifically, in your home, is connected to the guidance you're receiving from God.
But beauty and order both honor him, and clutter can hold you back from the fullness of the life we came to live or the person we came to become.
Here are some questions that will get you started thinking about it.
(1) Who is your clutter keeping out?
As women of faith, we often focus on hospitality as a joy when we want to have people over and an obligation when we don't. I don't believe we are ever supposed to welcome others at our own expense.
But what if someone needed you and you couldn't tell them to drop everything and get over to your home, because it was too messy? Or you really needed to talk to someone but couldn't ask anyone over because you wouldn't want them to see your home?
Those would be two examples of times when God could have used someone to offer help and that solution was blocked by clutter. Eek! We don't ever want to be in God's way.
(2) What mess is the clutter creating?
What I mean by that is that if you are holding onto things that no longer belong in your space, they are probably crowding out God in one way or another. For example, do you need the clutter to keep others out, to distract yourself from something that would be even harder to face, to keep you loyal to the people you grew up with who were messy?
I came up with those examples because I have used clutter in every one of those ways at one time or another in my life. Your mileage may vary, as they say, but there is probably something going on, and whatever it is, God wants to help you with it.
(3) Is the chaos blocking your path to connection with God?
Your home is meant to be both a haven & a launching pad for whatever you've been called to do. If it is cluttered, I believe you're not just stepping over or around it, you're feeling it on the inside.
And if so, wouldn't that make it harder to connect to God? To hear God's voice?
To rest as much as you need to before doing the work you're here to do? What if it is part of the reason you can't get enough sleep?
Clutter is not just physical; it's emotional. And I want to suggest that you can't afford it. Not if your relationship with God and your life in God is your true priority.
But these journal prompts and questions for reflection are meant to be a springboard to get you talking it over with God, yourself.
If you begin to feel called to let it go, and you feel ready to get started, I've got a free decluttering tips checklist that will help you get started even if just thinking about decluttering makes you feel overwhelmed.
